The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and Gaza at the core of Egyptian-American talks


Dr. Badr Abdel Aati, Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Egyptian Expatriates, discussed on Sunday with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau ways to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries.

The two sides examined prospects for developing bilateral relations in the political and economic fields, in addition to developments in Gaza, Sudan, and Egypt’s water security.

Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, official spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that both sides praised the depth of the strategic partnership linking the two countries and stressed the importance of enhancing cooperation in the political, economic, and military fields.

Gaza: consolidating peace and reconstruction

Regarding developments in the Gaza Strip, Minister Abdel Aati expressed Egypt’s welcome of joining the Peace Council, commending the role played by U.S. President Donald Trump in reaching the Sharm el-Sheikh Agreement.

The Foreign Minister stressed the importance of moving forward with the implementation of the commitments of the second phase of the U.S. president’s plan, supporting the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, and accelerating the deployment of an international stabilization force to monitor the ceasefire.

He also underscored the need to open the Rafah crossing in both directions and achieve a full Israeli withdrawal from the Strip, paving the way for an early recovery and reconstruction phase based on a comprehensive approach that responds to Palestinian needs, while ensuring the uninterrupted flow of humanitarian aid.

Sudan: humanitarian truce and political track

The meeting also addressed developments in Sudan, with Minister Abdel Aati emphasizing the importance of reaching a humanitarian truce and establishing safe havens and corridors for aid delivery, as a prelude to a comprehensive ceasefire.

The Foreign Minister reaffirmed Egypt’s position in support of launching an inclusive, Sudanese-owned political process, stressing respect for Sudan’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, as well as the preservation of its national institutions.

Water security: Egypt’s constants and clear messages

On water security, Minister Abdel Aati welcomed the message of U.S. President Donald Trump and its recognition of Egypt’s pivotal role in supporting security and stability in the region.

He affirmed that the Nile represents a vital lifeline for the Egyptian people, who suffer from severe water scarcity, stressing Egypt’s adherence to clear principles based on serious and constructive cooperation with Nile Basin countries, in accordance with international law, so as to achieve mutual interests without harming any party, while firmly rejecting any unilateral measures.

U.S. praise for Egypt’s role

For his part, the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State praised the close relations between Cairo and Washington, affirming that the strategic partnership between the two countries yields mutual benefits in various fields, and commending Egypt’s efforts to support security and stability in the region.
