Wadagni President of Benin with broad support… hopes and challenges for Talon’s successor

A new phase of stability and development is beginning in Benin after the presidential election was decided in the first round, demonstrating voters’ commitment to the path of stability.

Experts specializing in African affairs stated that the election results in Benin represent a pivotal moment in the country’s political and economic stability, noting that the landslide victory of Romuald Wadagni reflects strong confidence in the reform and continuity approach the country has followed in recent years.

Wadagni won the presidential election with 94% of the vote, compared to around 6% for his rival Paul Hounkpè, candidate of the Forces Cauris for an Emerging Benin party, classified among the moderate opposition, according to provisional results announced overnight from Monday to Tuesday by the Autonomous National Electoral Commission.

The final announcement of results falls under the jurisdiction of the Constitutional Court.

Paul Hounkpè did not wait for the provisional results to be announced; he conceded defeat and congratulated his opponent, who is regarded as the political successor to President Patrice Talon.

With this victory, Wadagni, aged 49, secured the presidency in the first round. He previously served as Minister of Economy and Finance and had accompanied President Talon since he came to power, according to Radio France Internationale.

He begins a presidential term of seven years instead of the previous five.

Wadagni is known for his technocratic background. He was born in the city of Lokossa in the southwest of the country.

Challenges

The new president is expected to face several challenges, including social issues, public freedoms, and strengthening security in the northern regions.

In an interview last month with Jeune Afrique, he said: “President Talon is a man who keeps his promises, and if I am elected, he will withdraw from the scene.”

Those close to Wadagni believe this victory reflects the success of a broad grassroots campaign, as well as the support of prominent political figures, including members of the opposition.

A promising future

Several African researchers and experts believe that Wadagni’s victory represents a natural continuation of a successful reform path and lays the foundation for a new phase of modernization and stability in Benin.

Senegalese researcher Aliou Sall, a specialist in African political economy at the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa, stated that “Wadagni’s election reflects clear confidence in an economic model based on fiscal discipline and investment attraction, which many African economies need today.”

He added that Wadagni’s experience as Minister of Economy provides “a strong guarantee for continued financial stability and growth.”

Ivorian researcher Marie Claire Kouamé from the African Institute of Governance said that “Benin offers a model of an orderly transfer of power within the same reform framework, which strengthens trust in institutions and consolidates stability.”

She noted that the first-round victory reflects “the clarity of voters’ political choices.”

Kouamé believes that the next phase “holds significant opportunities to strengthen social policies, particularly in education and health, building on the economic stability achieved.”

Regarding security challenges, she indicated that the new government has the opportunity to strengthen development in the northern regions, thereby contributing to stability.

Ghanaian researcher Kwaku Mensah from the Ghana Institute for Security Studies stated that “focusing on local development alongside the security approach will be the key to success in this phase.”

Mensah also considered that Romuald Wadagni’s victory represents an opportunity to reinforce the path of reform and stability in Benin, with positive expectations regarding the new leadership’s ability to address challenges and achieve tangible progress across various sectors.
