Ukraine Strikes Deep Inside Russia: Fatalities Near Moscow and Major Attack Foiled
Ukraine has intensified the military escalation in its war with Russia by launching attacks deep inside Russian territory.
As tensions in the Middle East have reignited between the United States and Iran, the focus of international attention has increasingly shifted eastward, while the conflict in Europe continues to intensify.
On Monday, the Russian news agency TASS reported, citing Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), that it had thwarted a series of large-scale Ukrainian drone attack attempts targeting two military air bases located deep within Russian territory.
In a statement carried by TASS, the FSB said that Ukrainian intelligence services had attempted to strike the Shagol Air Base in the Ural Mountains and the Ukrainka Air Base in Russia’s Far East. It added that those allegedly responsible for the attempted attacks had been arrested.
According to the FSB, Ukraine used aerial balloons and unmanned aerial vehicles to transport containers carrying additional drones into Russia’s Bryansk region, with the intention of subsequently delivering them to the two targeted air bases.
Moscow Under Drone Attack
Four people were killed and seven others were injured in Ukrainian drone attacks, including three fatalities in the Moscow region, local authorities announced on Monday.
Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyov wrote on Telegram: “In the town of Pionersky, in the Istra district, three people were killed and three others were injured when a drone crashed… In Solnechnogorsk, two people were injured after a drone struck a residential building.”
The governor also reported that 81 drones had been shot down across the Moscow region overnight.
In Russia’s Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, a woman was killed after a drone dropped an explosive device on the town of Berezovka. Two men were also injured in Krenitchnoye during another drone strike, according to a statement issued by the local authorities.
In southwestern Russia, Stavropol Region Governor Vladimir Vladimirov reported a “hostile attack” that caused “a fire in the industrial zone of the village of Vyazniki in the Shpakovsky District,” adding that no casualties had been reported at the time.
Ukraine has recently intensified its attacks on Russian territory, focusing particularly on oil infrastructure in an effort to weaken Moscow’s ability to finance its military campaign.
Meanwhile, Russia continues to carry out daily strikes across Ukraine, more than four years after the outbreak of Europe’s deadliest conflict since the Second World War—a war that has yet to produce a diplomatic settlement.
