Tunisia to investigate death of former leader Beji Caid el Sebsi
The Minister of Justice of Tunisia has authorized the opening of an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of former President Beji Caid el Sebsi, and the carrying out of the necessary penal investigations against anyone who might be discovered.
According to the website “Mosaique FM”, “In accordance with the provisions of Article 23 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the Minister of Justice Leïla Jaffel has authorized the Attorney General at the Court of Appeal in Tunis to open an investigation in the circumstances of the death of former President Beji Caid el Sebsi, and to conduct the necessary penal research against all those who will be revealed in the search”, after the recent renewal of the talk about his death in poisoned form.
Sheikh Mohammed Al-Hantati, a prominent media personality, said in a speech on a local television channel last Sunday: “El Sebsi died in hospital, and President Kais Saied knows that”, he said, accusing Ennahdha of being behind his death. “I demand that the Ministry of Defense reveal the truth to the Tunisian people”.
Last March, the sheik said: “He challenges the Ministry of Defense to publish the medical report on the cause of his death”.
Tunisian activist Mondher Bel Hadj Ali said in October: “The Carthage palace was infiltrated, and the late El Sebsi was poisoned”.
He said he met the late president days before his illness and informed him that he had decided to go to battle with Ennahdha’s secret service.
El Sebsi suffered a health problem at the end of June 2019 and was transferred to the military hospital in Tunis, where he received treatment; he died on July 25, 2019.
