UN committed to support Sudan’s transition

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the commitment of the international organization to support the transitional period until the elections, during a conversation with the Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

A week ago, Sudanese Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok submitted his resignation for failing to bring the parties to the dispute to one table or to secure a specific timetable for the transition, after he returned to power less than two months after the military coup on October 25.

According to the statement, the head of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council briefed the UN Secretary General on the developments in the country and the efforts made by the transitional partners to move forward with the transition process towards democratic transition and good governance.

The UN Secretary-General stressed “the international organization’s interest in the stability of the transitional period and the promotion of dialog between all Sudanese parties to ensure a smooth transition leading to free and fair elections that fulfill the aspirations and hopes of the Sudanese people”, he said.

According to the statement, the two parties (al-Burhan and Guterres) agreed on “the need to complete the structures and institutions of the transitional period, and expedite the formation of a civil government that works to achieve the objectives of the glorious December revolution, which is represented in freedom, peace and justice”.
The political crisis in Sudan has been marked by continued protests following the resignation of Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok and the unilateral assertion of power to al-Burhan, which are rejected by protesters demanding that the military component step down from power once and for all.
