“AK-47”: The “Legendary” Soviet Weapon Present in the Attempted Assassination of Trump

A man armed with an “AK-47” rifle, the most famous in the world, attempted to assassinate former U.S. President and Republican candidate Donald Trump.

The weapon the suspect tried to use to assassinate Trump is the most famous, widely used, and prevalent Russian firearm in the world. Moscow regards this weapon as a proud symbol of Soviet and Russian military industry.

According to Russian media, more than 100 million Kalashnikov rifles (AK-47) have been produced since its design and entry into service with the Soviet Army in 1947 up to the present. The rifle is used by the armed forces of over 50 countries and is listed among the greatest innovations of the 20th century.

Who Designed the “AK-47” Rifle?

The Kalashnikov rifle was invented and designed by the renowned engineer Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov, after whom the rifle was named, during his time in the hospital during World War II.

In 1945, Mikhail Kalashnikov decided to create an automatic weapon firing 7.62 mm rounds. In 1947, Kalashnikov presented his weapon at a small arms competition, winning first place and being named the “best weapon.”

From that moment on, the name “Kalashnikov” became not only that of a Soviet citizen but also of a legendary weapon that dominated the military world.

Various Models of the “AK-47” Rifle

There are multiple models of the Kalashnikov rifle, with the design team continuously working to enhance three key attributes: range, rate of fire, and weight, as well as recoil.

The rate of fire of the original Kalashnikov rifle (AK-47) did not exceed 600 rounds per minute, with an effective range of 800 meters. The modern Kalashnikov rifle (AK-12) fires at a rate of up to 1000 rounds per minute over a range of 1000 meters.

The weight of the Kalashnikov rifle has decreased over its development history, from 4.3 kg to 3.3 kg, making it one of the lightest and most comfortable weapons to use.

Regarding the length of the Kalashnikov rifle, the (AK-47) model measured 64.5 cm in the folded position, while the modern (AK-12) measures 72.5 cm in the folded position.

The Kalashnikov rifle can operate in various climatic conditions, including high humidity, hot deserts, underwater, and even when burning.
