“Committed to Supporting Peaceful Resolution”: UAE Exposes Sudan’s Delegate’s False Claims
The United Arab Emirates mission to the United Nations has expressed its unequivocal rejection of false claims made by Sudan’s Permanent Representative.
In a letter to the Security Council, the UAE mission to the United Nations affirmed that “the claims made by Sudan’s Permanent Representative have no basis in truth and contradict the strong fraternal relations between our two countries. Unfortunately, it seems that this is nothing more than an attempt to divert attention from the conflict and the deteriorating humanitarian situation resulting from ongoing fighting.”
It emphasized that “the United Arab Emirates remains committed to supporting a peaceful solution to the conflict in Sudan.”
Furthermore, it affirmed that “the United Arab Emirates will continue to work with all stakeholders and support any efforts aimed at putting Sudan on the political path towards achieving a permanent settlement and achieving national consensus to form a civilian-led government.”
It pointed out that “the United Arab Emirates firmly believes that dialogue is the only way to address grievances and pave the way for sustainable peace in Sudan.”
Text of the UAE Mission’s Letter
Based on recommendations from our governments, I am writing to you in response to the claims made in the statement by Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Security Council session number 9611 on April 19, 2024, under the agenda item “Reports of the Secretary-General on Sudan and South Sudan.”
The United Arab Emirates categorically rejects the claims made by Sudan’s Permanent Representative, which are baseless and contradict the fraternal relations between our countries. Unfortunately, it seems that this is nothing more than an attempt to divert attention from the conflict and the deteriorating humanitarian situation resulting from ongoing fighting.
All claims related to the involvement of the United Arab Emirates in any form of aggression or destabilization in Sudan, or its provision of any military, logistical, financial, or political support to any faction in Sudan, are false and lack any reliable evidence to support them.
Since the outbreak of the conflict in Sudan, the United Arab Emirates has consistently expressed its broad belief that there is no military solution to the conflict. We are deeply concerned about the failure of the conflict parties to respond to repeated calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities or efforts to find a sustainable solution to the conflict through dialogue, including the recent call by the Security Council in Resolution 2724 (2024).
Despite the numerous appeals issued by regional and international entities as a whole, the conflict parties have continued to prolong hostilities, causing untold hardship and suffering to the Sudanese people, and threatening to destabilize the entire region.
In this context, the United Arab Emirates also expresses its deep concern about the dissemination of misleading information and false narratives, which undermine any efforts aimed at promoting constructive dialogue and paving the way for achieving lasting peace ultimately.
On behalf of our governments, I would like to reaffirm the United Arab Emirates’ respect for and commitment to upholding the principles of international law, including the principles of the United Nations Charter. The United Arab Emirates also respects the sovereignty of other states and refrains from any interference in their internal affairs. It is committed to full compliance with Security Council resolutions and cooperation with the Council and its subsidiary bodies.
Accordingly, the United Arab Emirates will remain committed to supporting a peaceful solution to the conflict in Sudan. To achieve this goal, the United Arab Emirates will continue to work with all stakeholders and support any efforts aimed at putting Sudan on the political path to achieve a permanent settlement and achieve national consensus to form a civilian-led government.
The United Arab Emirates has actively engaged with parties in Sudan and relevant stakeholders, including the International Governmental Authority for Development (IGAD) and the African Union, and supported talks in Jeddah and Manama.
The United Arab Emirates also participated in the International Humanitarian Conference on Sudan and neighboring countries, recently held in Paris, and joined the principles declaration issued to advance peace initiatives for Sudan, pledging $100 million in support of humanitarian efforts in Sudan and neighboring countries.
The United Arab Emirates firmly believes that dialogue is the only way to address grievances and pave the way for sustainable peace in Sudan and emphasizes the need for all conflict parties to genuinely commit to participating in peace talks.
All parties in Sudan must focus on constructive engagement and meaningful dialogue instead of evading responsibility and undermining international efforts aimed at resolving the conflict and addressing the humanitarian crisis in Sudan. The current situation in Sudan requires all relevant parties to demonstrate a genuine commitment to achieving lasting peace and stability in Sudan.
The United Arab Emirates will continue to support all genuine efforts aimed at achieving peace and stability in Sudan and will remain committed to cooperating with all stakeholders to reach a peaceful solution to the conflict.
