France Fights ISIS in Syria: Strikes on “Specific Targets”

French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced on Tuesday that France carried out airstrikes earlier this week against the terrorist organization “ISIS” in Syria.

In a statement posted on the “X” platform (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Lecornu wrote: “French air forces conducted targeted strikes on ISIS positions in Syrian territory on Sunday.”

The French strikes follow a similar military operation recently conducted by the United States in Syria, during which Washington claimed to have killed two ISIS members.

Syria is now facing an uncertain political future after Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and other armed factions assumed power following the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad’s regime on December 8.

The swift offensive led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham ended a 13-year civil war but raised numerous questions about the future of a multiethnic state where foreign powers, including Turkey and Russia, hold significant and potentially conflicting interests.

International observers express concerns that terrorist organizations may exploit the current vacuum in Syria to regroup and reemerge.
