In New York – One dead and eight injured in shooting

“Two women and seven men were hit by gunfire near the intersection of East 139th Street and Fifth Avenue,” New York police said at a press conference, noting that a 21-year-old succumbed to his injuries on arrival at hospital. The shooting appears to have taken place during a social gathering, the same source said, adding that the investigation is underway to elucidate the circumstances surrounding this case.

In early June, New York State lawmakers passed a bill raising the minimum age for acquiring and owning a semi-automatic rifle to 21, in an effort to address to the resurgence of murderous shootings perpetrated in particular by young people under 20 years of age.

Another bill was passed by lawmakers on the Red Flag Act, which expands the list of people who can apply for extreme risk protection orders, which allow courts to temporarily seize firearms of anyone considered a danger to themselves or to others.

Shootings remain a recurring scourge in the United States, claiming many victims in a country where the right to own weapons is guaranteed by the Constitution. According to observers, gun crime is on the rise in major cities like New York, Chicago, Miami or San Francisco, especially since the 2020 pandemic.
