Explosions in Isfahan and a war of words between Washington and Tehran: what happened in Iran today?
Iran witnessed a series of simultaneous developments on Sunday, beginning with US President Donald Trump’s announcement that planned military strikes against the country had been suspended.
Trump made the suspension conditional on the rapid conclusion of an agreement that would include the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the elimination of what he described as the Iranian nuclear threat.
In the early hours of the morning, explosions were heard in the province of Isfahan, before the authorities confirmed that they had been caused by operations aimed at destroying unexploded ordnance.
Explosions in Isfahan
The Crisis Management Organization of Isfahan Province announced that the program to destroy unexploded munitions left over from the war had begun at nine o’clock in the morning and would continue until the afternoon.
It explained that the operations were being carried out in two areas, north and south of Isfahan, including Baharestan and the regions surrounding Mount Sofeh.
The authorities stressed that all the explosions heard were exclusively linked to the destruction of munitions, emphasizing that « there is no reason for concern for citizens and residents ».
Trump suspends the strikes
US President Donald Trump announced that the United States and Israel had agreed to suspend the strikes planned against Iran, stating that the decision followed requests from Tehran and several countries in the region, provided that an agreement could be reached quickly.
Trump said that the agreement must include « the immediate, full, and complete reopening of the Strait of Hormuz » and the end of what he described as Iran’s nuclear threat, adding that Israel shared the same commitment.
Iranian denial
For its part, Iran denied having requested the suspension of the strikes, insisting that its military remained on maximum alert and prepared for any possible scenario.
The Fars news agency, citing a source close to the Iranian negotiating team, also reported that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed.
Diplomatic activity
At the same time, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held telephone conversations with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, and Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir.
According to Iranian state media, Araghchi warned during those discussions about the dangers of further escalation while reaffirming Iran’s readiness to respond to any attack.
Ongoing military pressure
These developments come despite continuing indications that military operations could soon resume.
The Wall Street Journal, citing US officials, reported that Trump had ordered preparations for a new military operation that could begin over the weekend.
Meanwhile, CBS News reported that Washington and Tel Aviv were considering joint strikes targeting Iranian energy facilities.
In response, Iranian military officials accused the United States of escalating tensions and warned against any cooperation with Washington in the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
