Mature skin: Should you clean your face in the morning? A dermatologist responds

As time passes and hormonal changes occur, sebum production decreases and collagen and elastin synthesis gradually deteriorate. Mature skins thus tend to be drier and thinner than the others, or even more sensitive. However, although cleaning the face is generally recommended morning and evening in order to remove all the particles accumulated on the surface (dead cells, cosmetics, dust…), according to Dr. Marine Alexandre, a dermatologist, it is difficult to establish a general rule: “A mature skin whose hydrolipid film is more delicate does not clean itself in the same way as a young and oily skin. All skins are different, we have to test what we like or not.’

Facial cleansing: the perfect routine for mature skin

So, what are the right face-cleaning habits to adopt to take care of mature skin?

Bet on gentle cleaning

The most sensitive skins can be satisfied with spraying with thermal water. The dermatologist advises against anything that could irritate the skin and weaken it further, such as cotton and wipes that cause friction, as well as foaming cleansers whose sometimes aggressive surfactants can weaken the skin barrier. Use gelled cleansing lotions or cleansers that do not foam, gently massage with your fingertips, and rinse with water.

Reduce the frequency of washings

If your skin is particularly dry, try to slow down. Limit yourself to cleaning every other morning or every third morning, and see if your skin is doing better.

Adopt a post-cleaning ritual

Since the water is usually limestone, chlorinated (or both), be sure to neutralize any adverse effects by misting with thermal water after rinsing your skin. Still wet, it is ready to receive the treatment, because the active ingredients penetrate better. Apply a serum to vitamin C if you want an anti-aging active or a comforting moisturizer to restore the hydrolipid balance of the skin and strengthen the skin barrier.
