New York… Billboards denouncing human rights violations in Turkey
Campaigns to condemn human rights abuses and the rise in female homicides in Turkey have appeared on billboards in the US state of New York, where the US-based Human Rights Advocates Foundation in Turkey has launched street advertising in Manhattan.
The media campaigns seen by millions of people every week condemn the increasing human rights violations in Turkey and the triple increase in violent crimes against women. It reads: Stop crimes against women in Turkey, there are more than 5,780 women and babies in Turkish prisons.
The head of the human rights institution, Murad Kaval, said: Murders of women in Turkey increased by three times. Every day, women face new brutality. Today, too, there are thousands of female political prisoners in Turkey. Children are also in prison as political prisoners. We aim to mobilize people’s conscience with these announcements, adding that as of Saturday, March 6, protests will be held in 36 cities in America, Canada, Brazil, South America, and Europe regarding women’s rights.
This coincides with President Erdogan’s announcement on Tuesday of a move to promote human rights in his country, and the declaration of provisions to implement them in the new constitution, which he is seeking to approve instead of the current one. The opposition says that the Turkish constitution stipulates all laws that preserve human rights, but their actual implementation is absent from the ground. They consider Erdogan’s statements accused of suppressing his opponents, prepared for political consumption, and silencing international criticism campaigns.
