Tunisian man murders his wife by strangulation in front of their three children
A horrifying crime unfolded in the province of Bizerte, Tunisia, as a man took the life of his wife on Monday by strangling her, following a dispute between them.
Security authorities arrested the murderer on Tuesday.
In details, the victim, a mother of three children, had recently filed for divorce due to repeated incidents of violence inflicted on her by her husband.
The incident took place in the Shalghamiya neighborhood in the city of Menzel Bourguiba, located in the province of Bizerte in the northern part of the country.
A significant dispute erupted between the husband and wife on Monday evening, and the man proceeded to strangle his wife in front of their three children until she fell to the ground, after which he fled from the house.
Neighbors intervened and transported the woman to the local hospital in Menzel Bourguiba in an attempt to save her, but she had already passed away.
The husband confessed to his crime following his arrest.
According to official Tunisian sources, since the beginning of 2023 and up to November 25th of the same year, 27 women have lost their lives at the hands of their husbands and relatives.
On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25th, the Tunisian Association of Democratic Women, one of the most active human rights organizations in the field of women’s rights, launched a wide-ranging campaign to condemn the killing of women in Tunisia.
At that time, feminist activists organized a symbolic court to present details of these crimes, their causes, and to emphasize the lack of justice for the victims and their families in many cases. The symbolic court was set up in the presence of families and civil society to commemorate the victims and open platforms to share their stories and the family tragedies left behind.
