UAE warns of Hurricane Shaheen

The UAE’s National Meteorological Center has warned against visiting the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman, as Typhoon Shaheen is currently active in the region.

The center released a video taken Sunday morning by two of its employees to monitor the state of the sea in the eastern city of Kalba, which overlooks the Gulf of Oman.

The sea appeared to be tumultuous in the video, with southeastern wind activity, according to the speakers.

“It is expected that in the next few hours low clouds will proliferate on the eastern region, and the mountain ranges adjacent to it,” amid warnings of sea-faring and advisories of moving away from the ravines.

A few hours ago, the Center reported that cumulus winds with precipitation and rapid and sometimes powerful winds, reaching speeds of 45 km/h, could create dust and weaken the horizontal visibility of certain eastern areas of the Emirates.

According to projections, the wave will continue “from 5 a.m. Sunday to 11 a.m. local time”.

Earlier on Sunday, Oman’s Airports Authority said on its Twitter account that it decided to postpone and reschedule flights to and from Muscat Airport until Sunday evening or another notice because of tropical storm Shaheen.

The Sultanate’s authorities also urged thousands of coastal residents to leave their homes and go to emergency shelters, as they prepared for the intensification of the tropical storm and turn it into a first-class typhoon.

Oman’s National Emergency Management Committee called for evacuations in the Northern regions of Barka and Saham and coastal areas, including parts of Muscat, where storm Shaheen is expected to arrive on Sunday with strong winds and heavy rains.

On Friday, Oman’s Civil Aviation Authority said it expects the storm to intensify and turn into a first-class typhoon within 24 hours. It expected the sea waves to rise and urged citizens to stay away from low places for fear of floods.
