85 dead and 47,000 displaced due to heavy rains in Peru

The National Institute of Civil Protection announced that the severe weather affecting the country since the beginning of the rainy season in December has resulted in 85 deaths and the displacement of more than 47,000 people.
According to the latest report issued by the institute, the death toll has nearly doubled since February, when it stood at 47 fatalities.
The institute stated that “the number of displaced people across the country has reached 47,789,” adding that 3,098 houses have been destroyed and 19,000 others have become uninhabitable since December.
Most of the victims lost their lives due to landslides, floods, and rivers overflowing as a result of continuous rainfall in the Andean and Amazonian regions. The rainy season in Peru typically lasts until April.
