Arab coalition: Yemen truce is part of Saudi initiative to end crisis
The Saudi-led Arab coalition welcomed on Friday the truce in Yemen, stressing that it comes within the context of the Saudi initiative to end the Yemeni crisis to reach a comprehensive political solution.
“The command of the coalition’s joint forces welcomes the announcement by the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, of the start of a truce”, said Brig. Gen. Turki al-Maliki, official spokesperson for the Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen.
“The truce will stop all forms of military operations inside Yemen and on the Saudi-Yemeni border”, he said, in accordance with the detailed arrangements announced by the special envoy and under the auspices of the UN.
“The truce aims at providing the environment and the appropriate ground to reduce the escalation and reach a political settlement of the conflict between the Yemeni parties and achieve a comprehensive peace”, he said.
“The joint forces command welcomes and supports the Yemeni government’s announcement of its acceptance of the UN-brokered truce”, al-Maliki said. It also appreciates the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s special envoy to Yemen to declare a truce.
“The truce comes within the context of the Saudi initiative to end the Yemeni crisis in order to reach a comprehensive political solution, announced in March 2021, and the announcement by the coalition to stop military operations inside Yemen, which came in response to the call of Dr. Nayef Falah al-Hajraf, secretary-general of the Gulf Co-operation Council”, he said.
“The command of the coalition’s joint forces supports the efforts and arrangements of the United Nations to consolidate the truce and prepare the atmosphere for the Yemeni parties to start the political process and reach a comprehensive peace that achieves security, stability and prosperity for the brotherly Yemeni people”, he said.
