Cristiano Ronaldo ‘ticks box’ for Chelsea as Todd Boehly eyes ambitious summer transfer
Manchester United icon Cristiano Ronaldo is once again making headlines after returning late to training amid reports he has asked to leave Old Trafford this summer, with Chelsea one of the clubs interested.
The Portuguese is eager to continue playing Champions League football, something that United, and Erik Ten Hag, will not be able to offer after last season’s sixth-place finish.
Prior to the news of Ronaldo’s thoughts broke, reports of a meeting between Todd Boehly and agent Jorge Mendes emerged with the prospect of signing the 37-year-old discussed.
With Romelu Lukaku recently completing a return to Inter Milan on loan for the 2022-23 campaign, Thomas Tuchel is in need of a fresh face to lead his attack.
Unsurprisingly the prospect of Ronaldo joining the club has been hotly debated. Last season saw the forward score 24 goals but receive plenty of criticism for failing to help his side press from the front. But this is something that Paul Merson does not see being a problem in west London, insisting Ronaldo would solve a problem in the side.
“You hear about Ronaldo as well, I think Ronaldo ticks the box for Chelsea,” Merson said on Sky Sports on Tuesday. “I think Chelsea play a different way to Man United, they’re not a counter-attacking team, they play a lot of football round the edge of the box, I think Ronaldo ticks the box for Chelsea”.
