Spain Ease Past Austria to Reach the FIFA World Cup Round of 16
The 2010 FIFA World Cup champions will face either Portugal or Croatia in the next round.
Spain secured their place in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Austria on Thursday, thanks to a brace from Mikel Oyarzabal and an outstanding defensive performance.
Spain, who entered the tournament among the favorites to win the title and have yet to concede a goal, will now face either Portugal or Croatia in the knockout stage.
The Spanish side started the match aggressively, with Lamine Yamal posing a constant threat to Austria’s defense as his team looked to take an early lead on a sunny afternoon in Southern California.
Spain believed they had opened the scoring through a close-range finish by Marc Cucurella, but the referee disallowed the goal after ruling that goalkeeper Alexander Schlager had been impeded.
Spain’s sustained pressure eventually paid off when Cucurella delivered a precise cross into the penalty area, allowing Oyarzabal to fire a low shot into the net, delighting the large contingent of Spanish supporters in attendance.
Schlager kept Austria in the contest before halftime by producing two consecutive saves, first from a free kick and then amid the ensuing scramble, ensuring his team went into the break trailing by only one goal.
Austria’s best opportunity of the second half came when Sasa Kalajdzic met an excellent cross inside the penalty area with a close-range header, but his effort sailed over the crossbar.
Austria, who had narrowly qualified for the knockout stage thanks to a last-minute equalizer against Algeria, struggled to create clear scoring opportunities against a composed Spanish side that controlled possession calmly and remained disciplined defensively, preserving its perfect defensive record in the tournament.
Pedro Porro doubled Spain’s advantage in the 66th minute with a header into the center of the goal in front of a packed stadium that included Spanish actors Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem among the spectators.
Oyarzabal added his second goal of the match in the 89th minute, taking his tournament tally to four goals after capitalizing on a defensive mistake by an increasingly frustrated Austrian side.
Spain, the 2010 FIFA World Cup champions, had begun the tournament on a disappointing note with a goalless draw against Cape Verde, a result that raised questions about the team’s form, particularly in the absence of the injured Nico Williams.
However, Spain delivered an impressive performance on Thursday, with confidence boosted by the outstanding display of 18-year-old Lamine Yamal, who appeared to have fully recovered from the hamstring injury that had limited his involvement earlier in the tournament.
