Sudanese official reported that Pompeo will visit Khartoum later
A Sudanese government official reported on Sunday that the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will visit Sudan in the coming days. Since the overthrow of former leader Omar al-Bashir in April 2019, Sudan has been normalizing ties with the United States however is still seeking removal from a list of countries that the US considers as state supporters of terrorism.
It’s also expected that Pompeo will visit Israel and the United Arab Emirates on Monday and Tuesday after the deal between the two countries this month to establish full relations. Whereas, the Sudanese official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, refused to show more details of the visit of Pompeo.
Indeed, finishing the list of terrorism is the best priority for the transitional military-civilian ruling council of Sudan and the government of technocrats that works under its supervision. Otherwise, the listing dates to 1993 and makes Sudan that suffering from a deep economic crisis, is technically inappropriate for the reduction of debt and financing from international donors.
A senior government source informed Reuters last week that there is an expectation of a significant advancement about the case in the coming weeks. The chief of Sudan’s ruling council met in February the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, while he doubted any rapid normalization of relations.
Moreover, this week, Sudan dismissed its foreign ministry spokesman following he described the decision of UAE to become the third country to normalize ties with Israel a brave and bold step.
