EU examines classifying Iran Revolutionary Guards as terrorists

Germany and the European Union are examining whether to classify Iran’s Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on Sunday.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on Sunday that Germany and the European bloc are considering the inclusion of the Revolutionary Guard in the terrorist lists.

In an interview with the German Broadcasting Corporation (ARD), she explained, “I made it clear last week that we will impose another package of sanctions.”

“We will also study how to put the Iranian Revolutionary Guard on the terror lists,” she said. “There are no ongoing negotiations on the nuclear deal between Iran and the West.”

Her comments come after the head of the Revolutionary Guards warned protesters that Saturday would be their last day of taking to the streets, in a sign that security forces may intensify their already fierce crackdown on widespread unrest.

Last week, Germany said it was moving to tighten entry restrictions for Iranians, coinciding with the implementation of the already announced EU sanctions package.

In 2019, under President Donald Trump, the U.S. designated the IRGC a terrorist organization.

If the EU goes in the same direction and designates the Guard as a terrorist organization, the bloc’s member states will be able to freeze the organization’s assets in the EU.
