UAE, Sudan: Active Diplomacy for Peace Accelerates Resolution of Crisis
The UAE’s active diplomacy remains a fundamental pillar of peace and stability in the world, contributing to the prevention of conflicts and mediation of crisis resolution.
“Since the outbreak of the conflict in Sudan between the army and rapid support forces, the UAE has been relentless in its efforts to promote a return to the political framework, dialog, resolution of all differences, and progress in the transitional phase to achieve the desired political and security stability in Sudan.”
Intensive communications
These intensive efforts were the latest in a series of contacts held Friday between Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and his South Korean and Dutch counterparts, Park Guin and Wopke Hoekstra.
Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan discussed during the two calls the latest developments in Sudan and the international efforts exerted to stop the escalation and calm the situation. He also discussed ways to work for the return of dialog between the two parties and to find a political settlement to the crisis that guarantees Sudan and its people stability, security and prosperity.
Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and his South Korean counterpart stressed “the importance of ensuring the safety of civilians, third country nationals and humanitarian workers”.
They also stressed “the need for a speedy end to military operations and the preservation of the capabilities of the Sudan and its people.”
“Returning to the dialog table is the way to reach a political settlement for the crisis in Sudan,” Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan said.
“The UAE supports all efforts exerted to stop the escalation and help our brothers in Sudan overcome these difficult conditions,” Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan said.
Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan also discussed the situation in Sudan with Dutch Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra.
The two ministers discussed “ways to contain the current crisis, stop the military escalation and focus on returning to the dialog table to adopt political solutions and achieve a national consensus among all parties to restore security and stability to Sudan and its people,” the statement said.
“The protection of civilians and nationals of other countries is a top priority as military operations in Sudan continue,” they stressed.
“The UAE stands by the brotherly Sudanese people and supports their aspirations for a secure and peaceful future,” Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan said.
Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan stressed “the importance of advancing efforts aimed at returning to the dialog table to resolve the contentious issues in order to reach a sustainable political settlement to this crisis.”
Effective mediation
“The UAE’s diplomatic efforts have not been limited to intensive contacts, but have yielded results through active diplomacy in effective steps to mediate between the parties in Sudan and some countries.”
The UAE announced on Thursday the success of a mediation effort in co-ordination with Egypt to ensure the safety of Egyptian soldiers in the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and to hand them over to the Cairo embassy in Khartoum.
The two brotherly countries expressed their appreciation to the International Red Cross for its efforts in supporting the process of ensuring the safety of Egyptian soldiers.
The foreign ministries of the UAE and Egypt said the move comes within the framework of the two countries’ stance in support of the truce through continuous communication with the Sudanese parties to ensure restraint, de-escalation and a return to the political track.
The two ministries affirmed the commitment of the UAE and Egypt to continue their efforts to stop the fighting and protect civilians and civilian facilities.
They stressed the importance of intensifying efforts aimed at returning to the political framework and dialog to resolve all differences and move forward with the transitional phase, in order to reach the desired political and security stability in Sudan.
