The fog disrupts New Year celebrations in China… Red alert

Chinese people across the country are preparing for possible travel disruptions during the New Year holiday after the National Meteorological Center warned on Friday that dense fog would cover areas from Hebei Province in the north to Shanghai in the south for more than 24 hours.

The Central Meteorological Observatory issued the first red fog alert since 2017.

A family dispute over “Christmas gifts” ends in a fatality. The weather is expected to improve starting Saturday evening, with cold winds expected to blow across the country.

The “Flight Master” application for monitoring air traffic showed that more than 600 flights were delayed in various cities, including Urumqi and Xijiazhuang in Hebei, and Qingdao in Shandong and Shanghai.

The National Meteorological Center said that dense fog is expected to cover areas of Hebei Province in the north, Henan Province in central China, and the provinces of Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shandong in the east, as well as the cities of Shanghai and Chongqing from Friday morning.

It is expected that the dense fog in parts of Hebei, Shandong, Anhui, Jiangsu, and Shanghai will reduce visibility to less than 200 meters and less than 50 meters in some areas.

The Central Observatory urged residents on Friday to pay attention to weather alerts and traffic conditions, advising them to reduce outdoor activities. It added that residents in parts of Shandong, Anhui, and Jiangsu should avoid going out unless necessary.
