Was Nasrallah Buried Secretly?

No one knows what’s happening behind the scenes: is Hezbollah truly waiting until Friday to hold a funeral for Hassan Nasrallah, or has the matter already been “settled,” with its Secretary-General buried in secret?

All possibilities are on the table, given the complete ambiguity surrounding a situation that has begun to attract significant attention, while Hezbollah remains silent in the face of Israeli media reports confirming the date.

Hezbollah has not officially spoken about the date of Nasrallah’s funeral, who was killed a week ago in Israeli airstrikes on his underground headquarters.

Nasrallah died last Friday in an Israeli airstrike on the southern suburbs of Beirut, the party’s stronghold.

Below are the different versions and scenarios regarding this issue:

What did Hezbollah say?

Officially, Hezbollah has not mentioned Nasrallah‘s funeral date, a stance that seems logical given the developments on the ground and the tense situation in Lebanon, marked by ongoing Israeli airstrikes.

But does this mean the party might “take the risk” of secretly burying its Secretary-General, risking discontent among its base over an action that could be seen as fear or “cowardice”?

Or could the party’s heavy losses justify such a step?

What did Israel say?

The Israeli Broadcasting Authority reported that Hezbollah is planning to hold Nasrallah‘s funeral this Friday, but the party denied this in a statement.

However, this denial does not necessarily mean Hezbollah‘s known intention, as it could be a diversion, but the actual situation might suggest otherwise.

Even if Hezbollah took the risk of holding Nasrallah‘s funeral today, some observers believe this would provide Israel with the opportunity to strike its supporters as they gather for the funeral.

If the information reported by the Israeli Broadcasting Authority is accurate, it would mean that hundreds, if not thousands, would gather during the funeral procession, which would take place either in southern Beirut, the Bekaa Valley, or southern Lebanon, areas where Hezbollah is active and enjoys support.

Such a massive gathering would likely not go unnoticed, and thus, analysts believe it would be difficult to risk losing the party’s base after its leadership.

This was confirmed by Lebanese media, which reported that all potential locations for Nasrallah‘s funeral are under continuous bombardment.

Where is the body?

No one knows in which hospital Nasrallah‘s body is being held, most likely for security reasons, fearing that Israel might target party leaders during their visit to retrieve and bury the body, according to Lebanese media.

These circumstances further reinforce the belief that Nasrallah has been buried in secret.

In Lebanon or Iran?

No one can also answer whether Nasrallah‘s body remains in Lebanon or has been transferred to Iran.

In any case, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei will lead Friday prayers, an event that rarely occurs, during which he will deliver a sermon that may address the recent Iranian missile strike on Israel and the growing escalation between Tehran and its allies on one side, and Tel Aviv on the other.

This Friday sermon, the first delivered by the Supreme Leader in about five years, comes after Nasrallah‘s death.

During the prayer, the Supreme Leader also presided over the commemoration of Nasrallah.
