Italy: Rescue and Evacuation Operations after Catastrophic Floods

On Thursday evening, Italy experienced a series of floods and landslides caused by heavy rains, prompting a large-scale intervention by firefighting teams.

According to authorities, more than 350 rescue operations were carried out in the regions of Liguria, Tuscany, and Emilia-Romagna over Thursday and Friday.

The Liguria region was among the hardest hit, where emergency interventions were focused. Several people were rescued after being trapped in their vehicles or the lower floors of their homes due to rising water levels.

In Siena province, Tuscany, 60 rescue operations were conducted, while in Livorno province, 30 people were evacuated due to the flooding of the Cornia River. Authorities also evacuated a retirement home in the nearby town of Suvereto after water levels rose to a life-threatening level for the residents.

Heavy rains and strong winds are expected to continue across most of Italy over the weekend, raising concerns about the potential for further damage.
