30% of Global Plastic Pollution is caused by “Car Tires”

Microplastic particles from tire wear during driving accumulate in soil, water, and food, accounting for 30% of global plastic pollution, according to ScienceAlert.

However, these particles are often overlooked and not treated as a distinct category of pollution despite their unique characteristics. Recognizing them as a specific environmental issue could boost research and guide policies to combat tire-related pollution.

The report highlights that tire particles contain hundreds of added chemicals, such as zinc oxide and 6PPD, which pose significant threats to ecosystems, especially aquatic life.

Additionally, heavy vehicles, including electric cars, are among the largest contributors to increased tire wear and higher plastic particle emissions.

Acknowledging tire particles as a separate category of pollution could help steer research and appropriate policies. Innovative regulatory solutions are needed, such as taxes based on vehicle weight and incentives for eco-friendly tire designs, to mitigate the environmental impact of this growing problem.
