Gaza Truce: “Fruitless” Talks Between the U.S. and “Hamas”

In a tense political climate, new negotiations took place between Washington and “Hamas,” but this time, they seem devoid of any tangible progress.

While the United States seeks to secure a quick deal to resolve the hostage crisis, Hamas insists on continuing the previous agreement, which includes a second phase involving an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

According to White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt, U.S. special envoy for hostages, Adam Bohler, recently met with a Hamas representative in Doha “to discuss the release of hostages.”

She added that Bohler “has the authority to speak to anyone” and that talks are “ongoing.”

The spokesperson also noted that there had been consultations with Israel.

U.S. news outlet Axios reported, citing sources familiar with the negotiations, that “the meeting broke the U.S. practice of not directly engaging with Hamas, but did not result in any breakthroughs.”

In a video statement released over the weekend, Netanyahu praised U.S. President Donald Trump as “the greatest friend Israel has ever had in the White House.” He referred to what he called “the President’s plan for Gaza” – which involved relocating Palestinian residents and transferring ownership to the United States to develop what Trump called the “Mediterranean Riviera.”

All 22 member states of the Arab League rejected Trump’s plan during an emergency summit held in Egypt on Tuesday, agreeing on an alternative proposal to rebuild Gaza in phases while keeping Palestinians in their land.

Netanyahu also thanked Trump for sending “all the munitions that had been withheld” by the administration of his predecessor, Joe Biden, due to human rights concerns.

The Biden administration agreed to send billions of dollars in weapons and military aid to Israel during the war – some of it to be delivered over the course of several years – but refused to send a single shipment of 2,000-pound bombs due to concerns over civilian casualties.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, more than 48,000 people from Gaza have been killed as a result of the war, which has devastated a large part of the territory.
