Under al-Burhan’s Sponsorship… International Warnings of Sudan Turning into an Iranian-Islamist Base

Spanish journalist and African affairs analyst Natalia Cuadros has called for excluding Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan from any upcoming political arrangements in Sudan, warning that the country risks becoming “a launchpad for Iranian influence and radical Islamist movements” in Africa.

In an article published by The National Interest, Cuadros stated that “al-Burhan is not a partner for stability, as some claim, but rather an agent of Tehran and the face of an unholy alliance with Islamist organizations, primarily the Muslim Brotherhood.” She cited intelligence reports confirming growing Iranian support for Sudanese army forces through the provision of drones and advanced weaponry.
She further argued that al-Burhan’s continued hold on power strengthens Iran’s dominance over the Red Sea and offers extremist groups a new foothold on the continent. Cuadros urged the United States to adopt a firmer stance, including diplomatic isolation of al-Burhan, freezing of regime assets, and disrupting Iranian military supplies.

Cuadros also stressed the need to transfer power to a national civilian government free from Islamist influence, asserting that “Sudan will not experience peace or stability as long as groups affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood remain in power or are shielded within political and military institutions.”
She concluded by stating, “President Donald Trump demonstrated his ability to curb Tehran’s ambitions. Now, Washington must reactivate that policy legacy to confront the growing Iranian-Islamist threat in Sudan.”
