Berlin Accuses Kyiv of Ordering the 2022 Nord Stream Sabotage

On Thursday, Germany’s Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office announced that official Ukrainian authorities were behind the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipeline linking Russia to Europe in 2022.

In a statement detailing the charges filed on Wednesday against a suspect in the case, prosecutors said that the man and several others had acted “on the orders of Ukrainian state authorities.”

On Wednesday, German federal prosecutors formally charged a suspect in connection with the Nord Stream sabotage.

Meanwhile, German media reported that a Ukrainian citizen had led the team that carried out the operation.

The Ukrainian national, Serhii K., is accused of attacking civilian energy infrastructure, causing an explosion, and destroying facilities, according to Germany’s public broadcaster ARD.

The underwater explosions severely damaged both the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines, rendering them unusable for transporting natural gas. As a result, the main routes for Russian gas supplies to Europe were disrupted for several months following the outbreak of the war in February 2022.

In a detention filing submitted to Germany’s Federal Court of Justice in December 2025, prosecutors alleged that Serhii K. helped coordinate a team that used a sailing yacht named Andromeda to place explosive devices on the pipelines near the Danish island of Bornholm in September 2022.

According to the court documents, Serhii K. is suspected of serving as the coordinator aboard the yacht and the leader of the team, rather than acting as a diver or explosives specialist.
