Russia Resumes Attacks on Kherson After Truce Ends

Russian forces resumed attacks on Ukraine’s southern Kherson region on Monday following the expiry of a local truce described as the longest since the war between the two countries began in 2022, according to Agence France-Presse.

Local authorities said in a statement that a Russian drone struck a car in Kherson’s Korabelny district at around 8 a.m. on Monday. A 62-year-old woman and a 73-year-old man were injured and taken to hospital for treatment.

The truce ended on Sunday after taking effect the previous Tuesday through mediation by US First Lady Melania Trump. It enabled a humanitarian mission in Russian-controlled Oleshky, allowing hundreds of stranded civilians to leave.

A senior Ukrainian official told AFP on Sunday that Russia had rejected a Ukrainian proposal to extend the truce.

Kherson regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin had earlier urged residents to exercise extreme caution as the ceasefire expired.

The Ukrainian military, meanwhile, accused Russian forces of using the pause in fighting to reinforce their positions.

Talks between Russia and Ukraine are expected to resume in November under US mediation. The Kremlin has repeatedly rejected calls for a broader ceasefire, saying it intends to continue military operations to capture the remainder of eastern Ukraine.
