After Republican Defeat, Iran’s Hardliners Raise Their Demands
Iranian hardliners have seized on Republican losses in the congressional elections to demand that President Donald Trump pay a heavy price to exit the conflict, insisting that Tehran has won its war against the United States.
In an analysis published Saturday, CNN said Iran’s influential hardline faction had intensified its rhetoric this week, publicly calling for no concessions to Washington in the ongoing negotiations.
Celebrating the Republican Defeat
Following the heavy midterm defeat suffered by Trump’s Republican Party, Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei warned against “the slightest inclination towards surrender”—a warning hardliners believe was directed at Iranian negotiators.
Trump acknowledged in a telephone interview with Fox News that the war in Iran had partly contributed to Republican losses. Vice President JD Vance was more explicit, writing on X: “The reason we lost is the war.”
“These admissions appear to have galvanised Iranian hardliners, with conservative politicians and media outlets celebrating the Republican defeat as a victory for Iran,” the analysis continued.
The hardline Raja News agency published an article arguing that “the United States should not be given a way out before paying the price for attacking Iran” and that “Trump should not be allowed to escape through a rushed agreement.”
No Concessions
“Iran’s leadership views the US election results as vindication of its strategy against the United States. As a result, Tehran is likely to take an even harder line on the conditions for reaching an agreement with Washington,” Hamidreza Azizi, senior Iran analyst at the International Crisis Group, told CNN.
“Given the latest election results, the Iranians see no reason to make nuclear concessions to Trump. They are also expected to insist more strongly than before that the United States take the first step before any agreement is concluded,” he added.
