Turkey freezes assets of 770 people for financing terrorism

The Turkish judiciary has frozen the assets of 770 people and institutions based in the United States for financing terrorism.

A ruling published in Turkey’s official gazette on Friday showed that Ankara had frozen the assets of the Chicago-based Niagara Foundation over its links to US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom Turkey accuses of being behind a 2016 coup attempt.

The official Gazette said more than 400 people had their assets frozen because of their links to Gulen.

It added that this step was taken on the basis of strong evidence that they had committed acts under the Terrorist Financing Act and acts prohibited from providing and collecting funds.

According to the decision, the assets of more than 200 people accused of links to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party and ISIS have been frozen.
