A meteor shower every minute… A meteor shower illuminates the sky of the region

The “Geminids” or “Gemini” meteor shower illuminated the skies of Egypt and some countries in the region from Wednesday dawn until Thursday dawn.

Specialists and astronomy enthusiasts are observing this astronomical phenomenon that lights up the sky with about 120 multi-colored meteors, a beautiful scene awaited by astronomy lovers every year.

Dr. Ashraf Tadros, a professor of astronomy at the National Institute for Astronomical and Geophysical Research in Egypt, said that the “Geminids” meteor shower is the queen of meteor showers.

He added that astronomy enthusiasts follow this phenomenon, considering it one of the best and most beautiful meteor showers throughout the year, confirming the possibility of seeing one meteor every minute in the absence of the moon. The moon is not visible throughout Wednesday, marking the birth of the new moon, as it rises with the sun and sets with it, with the illuminated face facing the sun and the dark side facing the Earth.

According to astronomers, this night is considered the best night during the month of December, and astronomers highly recommend it for observing faint celestial bodies such as galaxies, distant constellation stars, and star clusters.

The “Geminids” meteor shower occurs annually from December 7 to 17, reaching its peak this year on the night of December 13 and dawn of December 14, and can be observed from a completely dark location away from city lights.
