AP: Houthi militia targets civilians in Taiz
Yemeni health officials said that a father and son were killed when Houthi rebels shelled their house in the Yemeni government-controlled city of Taiz. Speaking to the Associated Press, a witness described seeing the man’s mutilated body after Sunday’s attack. The three victims’ children were injured and taken to hospital for treatment.
Houthi terrorism
Ali Saleh, an eyewitness, told the Associated Press: “When the shell hit the house, we felt a tremor in the neighborhood. What can I say? When I came out, it felt like the day of the resurrection. Smoke and dust covered the entire area. It’s something I can’t describe,” he said,
Yemeni Information Minister Muammar Al-Eryani said that six children were injured in two separate attacks, adding that “Houthi artillery bombardment on the house of Sahim Al-Amiri in the old airport district killed the father and injured his two children, Sami and Amir, whose legs were amputated, and his brother Hashim and a citizen were wounded by sniper fire in the Al-Shaqab area,”
Al-Eryani called on the international community to “include the Houthi militia immediately in the lists of international terrorism,” adding that the United Nations failed to extend the truce in Yemen after the Houthi militia refused to extend it starting last October after a six-month ceasefire. The United Nations special envoy to Yemen is making efforts to restore the truce.
Worsening crisis
The UN Security Council last week issued a statement condemning the Houthis’ drone attack on an oil plant in Hadramaut province. The statement stressed that any escalation will only exacerbate the suffering of the Yemeni people, and called on the Houthis to immediately stop such attacks, respect their obligations under international humanitarian law, give priority to the Yemeni people, and engage constructively in the efforts to renew the truce.”
