Dbeibah after the Blinken meeting : Libya mercenaries must leave

The head of the Libyan government of national unity, Abdel Hamid Dbeibah, stressed on Thursday the urgent importance of removing all illegal foreign mercenaries and armed groups from Libya to achieve security within the framework of a comprehensive plan.

This came after Dbeibah’s meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Berlin on the sidelines of the 2 Berlin Conference.

In a tweet on his Twitter page, Dbeibah said that Libya could start a new phase by cooperating with the United States regarding the departure of foreign mercenaries.

He said : “We stress the importance of removing mercenaries from Libya to achieve security within the framework of a comprehensive plan”.

He noted that he had discussed with Blinken the mechanisms of action to restore stability and reconstruction as well as steps to promote national reconciliation.

He also thanked the United States for its support in arranging elections in Libya.

Dbeibah said that he stressed the urgent need for all foreign mercenaries to leave the country to ensure national sovereignty over all Libyan territory.

On Wednesday, Libyan Prime Minister of National Unity Abdel Hamid Dbeibah demanded the full withdrawal of foreign mercenaries and troops from Libya.

Speaking at the launch of the 2 Berlin Conference, Dbeibah said that there are security risks that threaten the elections, including the control of mercenaries, adding : “We demand the complete withdrawal of mercenaries and foreign forces from Libya.”

Dbeibah’s statements come in the light of a new US approach to the Libyan crisis, which began under President Joe Biden, as it appears that the Libyan issue is of great importance.
