Egypt detained eight people about deadly train crash

On Monday, the prosecutor’s office said that Egypt gave an order of the arrest of eight people after a crash between two trains that caused the death of 18 people last week.

A statement from the prosecutor stated: The prosecutor general ordered that the two drivers… their two assistants, the guard of a traffic control tower, the head of traffic control in Assiut and two other guards … be remanded in custody.

The statement estimated the death total from Friday’s crash at 18, down from 19 that was cited by Health Minister Hala Zayed on Saturday, and an initially reported 32. The prosecutor’s statement stated that 200 peoples were injured, with increase from 185 cited by the health minister.

Many of those wounded in Friday’s collision that happened in the Tahta district of the southern Sohag province, are suffering from fractures. Moreover, surveillance camera photo seen by AFP indicated a fast-moving train in direction to another, which induced a carriage hurtling on the air in a mist of dust.

On his part, President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi promised to impose penalty for those responsible for the incident, which is the latest in a chain of rail accidents.

In fact, these crashes are generally attributed to poor infrastructure and maintenance. It should indicate that one of the deadliest Egyptian train collisions was occurred at 2002, when 373 people died as a fire ripped on a full train south of Cairo.
