Libya: Violent clashes between armed groups in Tripoli

Violent clashes erupted between armed groups on Friday night and Saturday in the Al-Jabs area south of the Libyan capital Tripoli.

According to Libyan media, the clashes took place in the Al-Jabs area in southern Tripoli.

New clashes broke out between militias loyal to the rival governments, using heavy and light weapons.

According to Agence France Presse, gunfire and explosions were heard around 01:00 a.m. local time on Saturday.

According to Libyan sources, the clashes ended after mediation by the 444th Brigade, and there were no immediate reports of casualties.

Libya is deeply divided with two governments: one in Tripoli, which came under a political agreement a year and a half ago under the chairmanship of Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, and the other headed by Fathi Bashagha, who was appointed in February by the Tobruk parliament and given confidence in March, based in the central city of Sirte.

Dbeibeh’s government was tasked with organizing parliamentary and presidential elections, which were scheduled for last December.

However, differences between political actors, particularly over the electoral law, led to an indefinite postponement, on which the international community had high hopes for stability in the country.
