No Substitute for Washington… Rutte Moves to Repair the Transatlantic Rift

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is seeking to mend relations with the United States, which have become strained following the war involving Iran.

Speaking at a press conference alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, Rutte stressed that the United States remains an indispensable partner in Ukraine’s defense.

“When it comes to defending Ukraine, there is still no substitute for the United States,” he said.

He added, “Europe is providing tremendous support to Ukraine through financial assistance, military aid, and defense production.”

Highlighting Europe’s contribution, Rutte continued: “Look at Germany and what it is doing bilaterally, as well as through the Czech ammunition initiative and other efforts, in addition to its investment in Ukraine’s defense industrial base. That is Europe’s role. The same applies to the United States… We need both.”

His remarks come amid growing transatlantic tensions, particularly after European governments declined to join the United States in its military campaign against Iran. The situation has also been aggravated by repeated threats from U.S. President Donald Trump to withdraw from NATO, his description of the Alliance as a “paper tiger,” and his controversial statements regarding Greenland.

At the same time, European countries are accelerating joint rearmament projects to address capability gaps. These initiatives include the development of advanced weapons such as stealth and hypersonic missiles, as well as strengthening military transport, aerial refueling, and reconnaissance capabilities.

The debate over reinstating compulsory military service has also resurfaced as a means of enhancing military readiness and strengthening social cohesion, amid growing awareness of the scale of today’s security challenges.
