Very Positive… Trump Reveals Details of the Iran Talks

“Very good meetings” — this is how U.S. President Donald Trump described the discussions between the United States and Iran.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Trump said that “things are going well between the United States and Iran,” adding that the meetings held in Qatar had gone well.

He added, “The process of dismantling Iran’s nuclear program is progressing well… They held very good meetings, and we’ll see what happens.”

Trump continued by saying that Iran “has come a long way… I think things are going well.”

The United States and Iran held talks in Doha on Tuesday. Two U.S. envoys traveled to the Qatari capital to oversee the implementation of the memorandum of understanding, while Iran announced that it had dispatched a technical delegation to Qatar, ruling out any direct meeting with American officials.

The memorandum of understanding, signed on June 17, provides for a ceasefire across all fronts, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the lifting of the U.S. blockade on Iranian ports, the release of part of Iran’s frozen assets, and the launch of negotiations aimed at reaching a final agreement within a sixty-day period, with the possibility of an extension.

The anticipated final agreement is expected to focus primarily on Iran’s nuclear program and the economic sanctions imposed on Tehran.

Persistent Tensions

Despite the continuation of diplomatic contacts, tensions between Tehran and Washington have escalated again in recent days, with both sides accusing each other of violating the ceasefire following attacks targeting vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

The situation was followed by U.S. strikes against military targets inside Iran, while Tehran announced that it had targeted sites linked to the United States. Disagreements over the management and security of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz also remain unresolved.
