On high alert: Asteroid lights up the skies of Yakutia, Russia

Officials and scientists reported that an asteroid lit up the night sky over the remote Republic of Yakutia in Russia’s far east on Tuesday. The asteroid left behind a fireball before likely burning up in the atmosphere, according to Reuters.

The Yakutia Emergency Ministry stated that all official agencies had been placed on alert as the asteroid approached. However, no damage was reported following its descent.

“Residents of Olekminsk and Lensk were able to see a comet-like tail and a bright light during the night,” the ministry added.

The European Space Agency said on the platform X that the asteroid was believed to have a diameter of 70 centimeters and had been detected approximately 12 hours before it appeared in the sky. It entered the atmosphere at 1:15 a.m. local time (16:15 GMT).

The agency further stated: “Thanks to observations from astronomers worldwide, our alert system was able to predict this impact within a timeframe of plus or minus 10 seconds.”

The scientific journal New Scientist quoted Alan Fitzsimmons, an astronomer at Queen’s University Belfast, who said before the fireball’s appearance that while the asteroid was small, it would be incredibly spectacular and visible from hundreds of kilometers away.
