Local police reported on Wednesday that one person died and eight others were trapped, some seriously injured, after part of a hotel collapsed overnight near the banks of the Moselle River in Germany.

According to Reuters news agency, the police stated in a report that they had located the body but had not yet retrieved it, adding that they managed to contact some of the people still trapped.
The statement said: “Due to the nature of the damage, this is an extremely difficult operation,” adding that the building in the town of Kröv could only be entered by emergency personnel with utmost caution. Investigators believe that 14 people were in the building when the upper floor collapsed at around 11 p.m. (2100 GMT) on Tuesday, with five of them managing to escape uninjured.

The police also said that 31 neighbors were evacuated from their homes for safety reasons.
