Philippines: 87 Dead Due to Storm “Trami”

The death toll from tropical storm “Trami,” which struck the Philippines, has risen to at least 87 people, while rescue teams are still trying to help people trapped in areas unreachable due to flooding, according to AFP.

A previous report indicated around 60 deaths.

The National Disaster Management Agency reported that around one million people were displaced due to floods caused by heavy rains that flooded hundreds of towns in the northern Philippines.

Andrei Dizon, the police chief in the severely affected Bicol region, about 400 kilometers south of Manila, told the agency that “requests for help are still coming in.”

The police recorded 31 deaths in this region, mostly by drowning. Residents were trapped on rooftops and in the upper floors of their homes, officials told AFP.

Dizon added, “We need to help them as quickly as possible. We’re receiving reports that children are getting sick.”

President Ferdinand Marcos visited the Camarines Sur province in the Bicol region on Saturday, where food and clean water are becoming scarce, while some areas remain fully submerged and difficult to reach.

In Batangas, located two hours south of the capital, the death toll has risen to 51 people, with 22 missing, the regional police announced.

According to the National Disaster Management Agency, five additional deaths were confirmed in other provinces, bringing the total to 87, according to an AFP tally based on police and agency figures.
