Renewed Houthi bombardment of Marib: attack strikes a displacement camp and government forces (exclusive)

Houthi missile and drone attacks resumed on Friday, targeting several areas of the city of Marib and resulting in deaths and injuries.

Local sources said that Houthi militias targeted the northern outskirts of Marib and the Sahn al-Jin military complex with four suicide drones and several ballistic missiles, while one missile struck a camp housing displaced civilians.

According to the sources, the Houthi bombardment also targeted a military camp belonging to the Shabwa Defense Forces in the Harib district, south of the governorate, causing several casualties among soldiers and displaced persons, including the deaths of three Shabwa Defense Forces soldiers in the attack on Harib.

In this regard, Yemeni state television reported that the Yemeni army’s ground defenses had shot down several Houthi drones over the governorate after attempts to target camps crowded with displaced civilians.

The Yemeni Ministry of Defense stated that Houthi militias had shelled the city of Marib, which is populated by civilians and displaced people, using a number of missiles and drones.

The ministry explained that the attacks struck several areas at a time when the city was experiencing extensive civilian activity, causing widespread concern among residents, while security and military authorities confirmed that they would continue taking the necessary measures to protect civilians.

This escalation comes amid repeated Houthi attacks against Marib aimed at undermining the governorate’s security and stability and targeting densely populated civilian areas.

On Thursday evening, Houthi militias cut telecommunications and internet services across large parts of Marib, while the internationally recognized government placed its forces on high alert amid fears of a ground offensive by the group.

These developments come only hours after Houthi missile and drone attacks targeted government military camps in the governorates of Marib and Hadramawt, killing more than fifty people and injuring dozens of others.

Marib governorate is considered one of the Yemeni government’s most important strongholds. Located approximately 120 kilometers east of the capital, Sana’a, it holds significant political, economic, and strategic importance, as it contains the country’s largest gas fields and the vital energy facilities of Safer.
