“Serious Mistake”… Russia Threatens “Military Response” to “German Missiles”

The United States‘ announcement of plans to deploy long-range missiles in Germany has sparked widespread anger in Russia, which has spoken of an “expected military response” to such a “serious mistake”.

Official Russian media quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov today, Thursday, as saying that Moscow would work on a military response to US plans to deploy long-range missiles in Germany.

According to Ryabkov, “the decision to deploy missiles in Germany aims to harm Russia’s security.”

In a joint statement yesterday, Wednesday, the United States and Germany announced they would begin deploying long-range weapons in Germany in 2026 to demonstrate their commitment to defense within NATO and Europe.

Meanwhile, Russian Ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov said that US plans to deploy medium and short-range missiles in Germany constitute a direct threat to international security and increase the risks of an arms race.

Speaking to Russian journalists about the US intention to deploy missiles in Germany, Antonov added: “Essentially, we are talking here about US plans to deploy medium and short-range missiles in Europe, which is a serious mistake on the part of Washington. Such highly destabilizing measures represent a direct threat to international security and strategic stability.”

The Russian ambassador emphasized that with such actions, the United States is increasing the risks of an arms race.

He said: “I would like to emphasize that Russian tolerance for provocations against the security of our country has no limits. Does Germany not truly understand that deploying these American missile systems on German soil will make them inevitable targets for Russian strikes? This is not saber-rattling, but simple logic for any normal human being.”

Last week, President Vladimir Putin said that Russia has the right to begin developing and producing medium and short-range missile systems after the United States withdrew from a treaty on these missiles, and after American statements about starting production of such weapons.
