Snowstorm after the Floods… Kentucky Holds Its Breath

The U.S. state of Kentucky is holding its breath as an approaching snowstorm threatens to jeopardize relief efforts following devastating floods.

Governor Andy Beshear announced on Monday that the death toll from the floods had risen to 11 and warned that the number could increase further.
Search teams have carried out more than 1,000 rescue operations following the floods that have affected nearly all of Kentucky and several surrounding states since Saturday.

Beshear stated that hundreds of people have been displaced, with more than 14,000 homes and businesses left without power, while another 17,000 homes lack access to water.

Authorities have deployed the Kentucky National Guard with air support crews from Indiana and Tennessee, along with federal search and rescue teams from Ohio, Indiana, and Tennessee.
Some areas of the state have recorded rainfall exceeding 20 centimeters, while forecasts predict snowfall of up to 15 centimeters.

During a press conference, Beshear stated: “We are still in the search and rescue phase of this emergency. Several missions are ongoing, and there are still people at risk.”

The governor added that three additional fatalities have brought the total death toll to 11, including 9 due to floodwaters and 2 from road accidents.
