Turkish Elections: Voting Ends and Results Announced Sunday Night

The voting period for Turkey’s presidential and parliamentary elections ended on Sunday with official polls closed, after the public took part in the country’s presidential and parliamentary elections to choose a successor to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has been in power for twenty years.

Voting under tight security

The voting process began at 8 a.m. and ended at 5 p.m., with high voter turnout and high turnout. At the same time, voting took place under tight security and under the supervision of Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu.

According to AFP, Turkey’s presidential and legislative elections this year are taking place differently than previous ones “due to the earthquake and the economy”.

Opinion polls show opposition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu in a good spot. Recent opinion polls consistently close but with opposition advances.

Erdogan Hopes for a Good Future for Country

Turkey’s outgoing President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Sunday he hoped the outcome of the presidential election would be “good for the country’s future” but did not speculate on his victory.

“It is important that all voters cast their ballots without concern until 17:00 (1400 GMT) to show the strength of Turkish democracy,” Erdogan said.

Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the Turkish presidential candidate and the main rival to the incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said after casting his vote in the elections on Sunday in Ankara that his country “missed democracy.”

“We all miss democracy, we miss standing together and embracing each other,” Kilicdaroglu said. “You will see spring returning to this country, God willing, and it will last forever.”

The results are expected to officially appear at 9 p.m., with all media outlets required to remain silent and no unofficial statements made.
