Urgent Appeal… Inmates in the Brotherhood’s Prisons in Taiz Are Dying of Hunger

The director of the main correctional facility in Taiz Province, which is under the control of the Al-Islah Party (the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood in Yemen), has issued an urgent appeal to the official authorities to quickly save the inmates from starvation.

Activists on social media circulated urgent appeals and distress messages from Major Issam Al-Kamel, addressed to the Presidential Leadership Council, the Attorney General, the government, the Minister of the Interior, the Chief Prosecutor of Taiz, and the local authorities. In these messages, he demands the immediate disbursement of the prison’s budget to meet the inmates’ needs for food and water, according to the site Al-Muntasaf Net.

According to these appeals, the budget for the Taiz Central Prison has not been disbursed for three months, making it impossible to provide food and water to the inmates, especially in the current dire economic conditions, with the collapse of the currency and skyrocketing prices of food and essential goods far beyond expectations.

In light of this, activists pointed to the large financial resources collected daily through taxes, levies, and illegal tolls by those controlling the liberated areas of Taiz, denouncing how this money is being looted. They called for dedicating just one day’s revenue each month to provide food and water for the prison inmates.

The liberated areas of Taiz Province are experiencing a catastrophic situation regarding human rights, especially with the existence of secret prisons run by Al-Islah members, the armed branch of the Muslim Brotherhood in Yemen. The concerned authorities have taken no action to address the crimes committed in these prisons against innocent people detained without evidence or judicial rulings.

According to multiple human rights sources in Taiz, the prisons controlled by Al-Islah elements operate outside the framework of any legal, judicial, or governmental oversight. Human rights activists even fear mentioning them due to the risk of brutal retaliation by a party that governs its members through religious manipulation.

These sources also report that every leader of Al-Islah controlling Taiz has his own private prison, whether he is a battalion commander in a military brigade or a leader managing a security institution. Due to their vast number, no official statistics exist.

The sources confirm that Al-Islah members and leaders subject the peaceful residents of Taiz to various forms of abuse and torture, mirroring the practices of the Houthi terrorist militias in the areas they control.
