Yemen: some organizations refuse to reveal financial files
The Yemeni government stated that international organizations reject to reveal their financial statements following transparency standards and laws.
Deputy Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Nizar Bashaib showed that certain UN and international organizations debate their projects in Yemen directly with donor countries, without any coordination with the relevant ministries. Besides, he alerted that this generates a conflict with the government’s priorities in projects that respect the country’s needs and directly help the public.
Bashaib affirmed during an exclusive interview with Asharq Al-Awsat that not obtain donor funds via the Central Bank of Yemen according to the determined outlines and international and Yemeni laws has a negative impact on the economy. This is also deteriorated the government’s control on the movement of funds inside Yemen.
Furthermore, the government is seeking to persuade and debate this subject with the organizations and donor countries, affirming that if money is sent via the central bank, it would be benefit from the national economy.
The Deputy Minister also indicates that the Ministry of Planning demanded financial records, administrative reports, and projects’ details from the international organizations, however; they were not sent.
The ministry tries to diminish the operational cost to guarantee that all citizens would benefit from the project’s funds. Actually, there are 83 international NGOs authorized to work in Yemen, and three new organizations have licenses to begin their activities soon.
Bashaib also noted that donor countries finance projects for Yemen via international non-governmental, international, or regional organizations, indicating that the government is making a great effort to coordinate with these international bodies to debate the quality, location, and cost.
