U.S. envoy to Yemen: Houthis kill civilians in Taiz
The US special envoy to Yemen, Tim Linderking, has accused Houthi militias of killing civilians in the city of Taiz, and of fabricating acts that disrupt the UN truce.
Speaking to reporters via Twitter, the State Department said that Houthi militias did not implement the road-opening clause under the UN truce and deliberately started the conflict.
“We have seen the Houthis create problems to implement the truce,” the U.S. diplomat said. “Instead of opening the roads, they ignited the conflict and killed civilians in Taiz.”
“The UN condemned these attacks,” he said, referring to a series of horrific Houthi attacks that have left civilians dead and wounded in Taiz, which has been under a tight siege for eight years.
Houthi militia attacks have escalated recently, with the most recent targeting at the beginning of September to achieve a field breakthrough in al-Dhabab, the only artery of Taiz, despite international and international condemnation of the unprecedented military offensive.
Observers urged the Presidential Council to explore alternative and quick options, including the use of force, to achieve the values of freedom, peace and coexistence in Yemen, which the Houthis blew up during the truce, in addition to abandoning their commitments, especially lifting the siege of Taiz.
A humanitarian truce in Yemen, which entered into force on April 2nd and will expire on October 2nd, is in place. The recognized government has fulfilled its provisions, including the ceasefire, and Houthi militias are not fulfilling their pledges, including opening a lifeline to the city of Taiz.
