Iran’s Revolutionary Guard on British Terrorism Index
Britain is considering designating the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, following sanctions already imposed by London.
Speaking in Parliament, Minister of State at the Foreign Office Leo Docherty said on Thursday that “Britain is considering designating the IRGC as a terrorist organization, but has not yet taken a final decision on this matter.”
During a discussion of the situation in Iran, during which some members called for banning the IRGC, Docherty said, “I would be wrong to speculate on the outcome of the current study of this issue by the government, which is being conducted in earnest.”
“But I would say that I think that invitations throughout the board, and the unity with which those invitations are being extended by all parties, will be taken into consideration by the government, and that is something that we are taking with a great deal of interest,” he said.
If the IRGC is designated a terrorist group, it would be a criminal offense in Britain to associate with, attend meetings, and carry its logo in public.
Iran has been witnessing massive protests since mid-September, following the killing of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini three days after her arrest by Tehran’s morality police. These protests were met with severe repression by the Iranian authorities, in which the Revolutionary Guards played a major role.
