Human rights organization reports the killing of dozens of Afghans by Iranian border guards

An Iranian human rights organization and Afghan reports stated that dozens of Afghan refugees were killed by the Iranian border guards’ fire.

On Wednesday, reports from Iranian and Afghan media revealed that nearly 230 Afghan refugees were killed last Sunday while attempting to enter Iranian territory.

The Iranian Human Rights Organization “Hal Vash” reported that Iranian border guards opened fire on Afghan migrants trying to enter Iran in the Kaljan Saravan region, located in the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchistan, resulting in the deaths of dozens.

In a statement posted on its official account on the platform “X” (formerly Twitter), the organization clarified that “Iranian military forces ambushed a group of Afghan migrants who were attempting to enter the country and opened fire, killing 260 people and injuring around 60 others.”

According to the organization, dozens of Afghan citizens were targeted by direct fire and RPG rockets last Sunday.

One survivor told the independent Afghan news agency “Amaj News,” “The number of Afghan refugees was about 300, of which only 60 to 70 survived, and the rest were killed.”

The exact number of dead and injured was not known at the time of writing this report, and Iran has not commented on these claims.

At the same time, some eyewitnesses, whose audio files were obtained by the organization “Afghanistan International,” said that around 300 Afghan migrants were targeted by Iranian military forces, and more than 200 people were killed.

Kaljan Saravan is located in the Sistan and Baluchistan province, on the border with Pakistan. Previously, Baluch insurgents infiltrated this border and attacked Iranian border forces, killing several of them.

This is not the first time Iranian forces have opened fire on Afghan refugees at the border. In a previous report, Amnesty International stated that Afghan migrants attempting to cross Iran and Turkey to reach safe countries had been targeted.

Taliban government officials also confirmed that the deportation of Afghan migrants from Iran has significantly increased, with more than 3,000 people returning to Afghanistan voluntarily or forcibly each day.
